3-Axle Coffee ☕️ Road Warrior Roundup – March 2026

It’s been a while since we put out a newsletter, but we’re hoping to get this going again — at least once a month moving forward. Grab a thermos of our bold dark French roast (or the medium if you’re easing into the day) – the no-nonsense fuel built for drivers who run hard and rest little. We’re brewing up the latest FMCSA and MNDOT regs plus a couple of jaw-dropping stories from the blacktop so you stay safe, compliant, and rolling.

FMCSA Fuel for Thought 🚛📋
February brought some actual wins on the deregulation front:

  • Electronic DVIRs are now officially crystal-clear – no more paper-based ambiguity headaches.
  • You can officially ditch the liquid-burning flares, spare fuses, rear license plate lamps on tractors when towing, rear impact guard labels, and a handful of other outdated equipment requirements. Less junk in the truck = lighter load.

On the enforcement side:

  • Non-domiciled CDL rule kicks in March 16 – only H-2A, H-2B, and E-2 visas qualify. States (including Minnesota) are already pausing issuances and yanking thousands nationwide after audits.
  • English proficiency enforcement is no joke – it’s now tied to out-of-service criteria.
  • ELD alert: On March 4, FMCSA yanked another 14 devices from the approved list. You’ve got until May 4 to swap them out or you’re running without an ELD (hello fines and OOS). Check the FMCSA registry today.
  • HOS pilot programs are recruiting 18 volunteer drivers to test more flexible sleeper-berth and 14-hour window options – could mean real relief down the road.

Random drug/alcohol testing rates stay at 50%/10% for now. Bottom line: fewer headaches on equipment, tighter rules on who’s behind the wheel.

MNDOT Minnesota Matters ❄️➡️🌷
Spring load restrictions are live and spreading:

  • Metro, South, and Southeast zones started March 3 at 12:01 a.m.
  • Central zone followed shortly after.
  • North-Central coming soon.

Check the official MnDOT map and 511mn.org before you load heavy – fines hurt worse than a bad cup of gas-station joe.

Other notes:

  • Minnesota officially paused non-domiciled CDL issuances back in December after a federal audit flagged issues (risking millions in highway funding).
  • Diesel prices are climbing past $4/gallon in spots – keep an eye on that fuel surcharge.
  • 2026 UCR registration is rolling; make sure you’re squared away.

Crazy Hauls & Wild Tales 📰🤯

  1. Wrong-Way Minnesota CDL Special: A Somali driver holding a Minnesota-issued CDL was caught on video barreling an 80-ton rig the wrong way for miles down Missouri’s Highway 61. Pulled over after he crossed the median, he failed the English proficiency test cold – couldn’t read basic road signs. Driver immediately placed out of service. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy called it out publicly. This is exactly why the new CDL and English rules are getting teeth.
  2. $400K Lobster Heist: A truckload of lobster meat headed to Costco stores in Illinois and Minnesota vanished after a fake carrier (complete with spoofed emails, forged paperwork, and phony truck signage) did a fictitious pickup in Massachusetts. FBI is investigating it as part of a bigger cargo-theft wave. Double-check every broker and carrier before you hook up – thieves are getting creative.

3-Axle Pro Tip
With spring restrictions, construction season starting (Hwy 210 and others), and broker scams on the rise, run your loads through a quick verification app and give yourself extra route buffer. And when you do pull over? Crack open a fresh bag of 3-Axle – our light roast still packs enough punch to wake you up without the jitters.
